Introduction

Union Films is the Student Union's cinema. We not only show a wide range of films, covering British, European, art house and Asian films as well as the latest Hollywood blockbusters, but we are also able to offer the rare opportunity to learn how to project the films, as well as running the front of house and 'back stage' areas in the cinema. We can do this as we are run by students for students in an friendly and supportive atmosphere, with jobs to suit all personalities. Whether you like the idea of showing films, organising tickets and sweets, browsing the Net, making colourful posters, negotiating with the political forums of the Union, or generally being busy and cheerful, we've got it!

The most recent and exciting development has been that of the refurbishment of the Union building. Four years ago it was decided that the old place could really do with a bit of a wash and brush up, so yea and verily, the building work was begun. After an emotional farewell, the old Debating Chamber, where Union Films has lived for some years, was knocked down. What is planned to arise like a Phoenix from the ashes will be an expansion of the current building into a swish glass-covered extension. In this there will be a large room painted black. This multi-functional room has two main purposes; for some evenings it will be a nightclub working in tandem with the Union bars, but on the nights that count it will be our cinema, and new home. Electronically racked seating will sit about 300 people, and we have the latest cinema-quality equipment.

We recently celebrated just over 40 years of Union Films, and we take pride in being one of the most successful departments in the Union (if not the most successful!). As well as being a productive department, we also have a good social life and a busy and buzzing office.
